Feelings
cont
Feeling
connected may be your partners key to passion. It could be your key
as well. Stop, wait, take a deep breath and ask yourself, " what am
I feeling right now "?
Knowing how you feel allows you to communicate with
your partner in a way you can be more easily understood and
connected. Recognizing and being able to name your feeling
increases clarity in your communication.
If knowing
how you feel is new to you then your first clue that you are having
feelings is very important. Usually the first clue is a physical
one, i.e. a feelings of tension, a knot in your gut, tight lips,
swallowing hard, back stiff, shoulders tight, clinched fist, teeth
or jaw locked or tight, etc. Or, maybe you know you are having
feelings but don't know what they are.
Oh oh, homework :-)
Keep a
pencil and paper with you during this next week and jot down how
your body is letting you know you are having feelings. Take the
feelings list everywhere
you go and jot down or circle the feelings you recognize.
Exercise: An
Emotional Inventory. Print this list of feelings. Carry it with
you stopping several times each day to ask yourself, "what am I
feeling at this moment". Notice how your body feels. Notice what
you are thinking. Notice your emotions. If you have difficulty
identifying your feelings look at this list and circle any words
that jump out at you or "seem to fit". Practice this for several
weeks.
Practice...Practice...Practice.
Caution: If you have avoided your feelings and this
exercise is a new experience for you, be aware that sometimes giving
yourself permission to get in touch with your feelings may cause
them to come in floods. This will pass. If you start to feel
overwhelmed by your feelings I encourage you to seek professional
help in sorting out these feelings and expressing them.
