Personal Empowerment
Your Personal Bill of Rights
A Personal "Bill of Rights" is a list of reasonable and
ordinary expectations. If any of these seem surprising,
extraordinary or unreasonable it could indicate you may not be
aware of your wants and needs or you may have difficulty setting
and maintaining appropriate boundaries for yourself and with others
- Read the list over
by yourself and circle anything that sounds unfamiliar or would be
awkward to assert for yourself.
- Ask your partner
to read and circle items and
- Share the list
with each other, including your circled items.
- Together discuss
(if you are in a relationship) how you can help each other
assert these items
- If you are not in
a relationship these Personal Bill of Rights are still the
groundwork around which boundaries are built and the corner stone
of
healthy relationships.
Think about what is
important to you and what your basic needs are
in a relationship, i.e.,
I need
to be left alone for a half hour to unwind when I get home from
work.
I need to be able to go out with friends at least once a week.
I need to have a certain amount of money I can use without asking.
I need to be held and hear sweet things before being sexual.
Share
these with each other. These are clues to your personal values and
those values you share. This can give you some clues to boundaries
you want to establish.
